Check Mate
Funded Aug 15, 2023Thank you so much for donating costumes for our "Chess" piece for our spring dance concert "Game Night." We had the opportunity to bring in an amazing choreographer for this piece, who really had the vision of the dancers representing the Chess pieces by wearing black or white. Each dancer was assigned a chess piece color and a chess piece. The dancers move in this piece in relation to how the Chess piece is allowed to move when playing the game. The movement given to the dancers is also representative of the character of their Chess piece.
This dance piece is the opening to our dance concert. With your generosity we will be able to open our show with a strong piece the audience is better able to understand thanks to the differentation of the costumes. Dance costumes continue to increase in price, and being a self-funded program it has been difficult to keep up with the growing costs. Thank you so much for your gernerosity and support in helping provide my students with a meaningful and educational dance performance.”

Funded Nov 29, 2022Thank you so much for donating flashlights to our "Illumination" piece for our spring dance concert "Astro." This has become a dancer favorite and was a great opportunity for dancers to learn about lighting effects in addition to creating their own original movement exploring the concepts of direct and indirect light. Students explored the ideas of using our light (both figurative and literal) to shine light on ourselves, on eachother, on a specific dancers, and to utilize their light to shine on the audience. The dancers even encourage audience participation by having the audience shine their flashlights from their phones on the dancers at the end of the piece. The literal use of light teaches a figurative lesson that our light shines so much brighter when we share our light with others, but we have to know and see the light in ourselves first.”

Funded Nov 29, 2022Thank you so much for your contribution to our spring dance concert, "Astro." Our Hip Hop piece, "No Gravity," tells the story of a student looking for answers bigger than themself. As they contemplate the big questions in life they get sucked into the vastness of the universe, where they realize the important role that they play, how we are all connected to something bigger than ourselves, and the magic of the unknown. Exploring the concept of "No Gravity" through props and blacklight features has taught the students to expand their perspective in terms of what is "normal" for dance production, how to break boundaries, and challenge themselves to go beyond the "regular." Stretching the imagination through choreography provides dancers the opportunity to increase their problem solving abilities and creative thinking. Thank you for your contribution that has helped these dancers evolve and grow in a fun and entertaning way! This dance is a crowd favorite, and really brings a fun, different, approach to our dance concert theme this year!”

Funded Jan 29, 2022I would like to extend my most heartfelt gratitude for your help and support this year. Thanks to you I was fortunate enough to be the recipient of two grants. Each of these grants aided in the purchase of necessities for our spring dance concert "Broadway."
Each year the Woods Cross High Dance Company presents a primarily student choreographed dance concert. Our dance concert is all-inclusive; showcasing students with varying dance abilities, students with special needs, and students of all socio-economic backgrounds. Students write the narrations to introduce each dance piece, come up with the themes for each dance piece, pick the music, choreograph more than half of the dance numbers included in the show, create artwork for the introduction of the dance concert, narrate the concert, and aid in the production of the program, as well as advertising and ticket sales.
This year our students studied Broadway, the history, the careers, the shows, the music, behind the scenes, etc. Their research lead to the inspiration of each dance piece in the concert, highlighting a different aspect of Broadway. This approach not only leads to a unique and original approach to a common dance concert theme, but also brings education and dance together.
As part of our dance concert this year we were able to showcase a dance to "Singing in the Rain." To put our own spin on this quintessential Broadway number our dancers are combining a hip hop style with the classic song. In order to really bring this piece to life we wanted to "make it rain." With your help we were able to do so, umbrellas, rain boots, and rain coats will really bring this number to life. As will our exciting special effects!
In addition to our "Singing in the Rain" number, your generosity helped provide props for multiple other pieces, in addition to providing much needed organization and proper storage for our amazing props and costumes. Your contribution will not only effect the students participating in this year's show, but will provide inspiration and creativity for future dance students. It will be exciting to see how dancers of future years put their own creativity and spin on the use of these costumes and props, and in what other ways they can be applied both thematically and in terms of movement.
We would like to invite you to come the Woods Cross High School Dance Company's performance of "Broadway" on March 28 and 29 in the Woods Cross High School Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at the following link https://dsdgive.net/event/1606.
Again, we cannot thank you enough for your generosity and support. As a self-funded program each year becomes a struggle to cover the ever-increasing costs of putting on a dance concert, and the support of Davis Education Foundation and your investment in the arts and dance education provides opportunities for students who otherwise may not have the opportunity to dance, exposure of the arts to students and the community, and an outlet for dancers to express their artistry and athleticism.”

Inspired by Dr. Seuss: Dr. Seuss and Dancing Shoes
Funded Nov 5, 2018A great big thank you for your support! As we come back from our Winter break our dance company begins to really dedicate ourselves to our spring dance concert. We begin after school rehearsals, Saturday practices, costuming, tech rehearsals, staging, the list goes on. This year we are excited to incorporate an additional piece into our concert, that all of our dancers are a part of, thanks to your large contribution. We were able to bring in choreographer Karlie Wheelwright to create an original piece of choreography just for us, "My Many Colored Days." Karlie is an alum of the Woods Cross High School Dance Company and was able to bring her experience back to educate the company's dancers today. We are excited to incorporate her unique style into our concert this year, and will be able to use and build off of this choreography in years to come. The bigger the variety of teachers/choreographers we are able to expose our dancers to the more well-rounded their dance experience and dance education. It is important to me that my dancers leave my program, especially my company, not just as dancers and performers, or even as choreographers, but as educated dancers able to apply not just technique, but meaning to their work. Thank you so much for helping me make that possible!”

Ms. Warner
