How can we reconnect our students with nature? As our society continues to urbanize we must reconnect our youth with accessible natural alternatives, such as a those offered by a greenhouse. There is no wifi in the forest, but I promise you will find a greater connection. – Anonymous Everybody LOVES to eat! Not everyone knows where their food is from. The average meal in America travels 1500 miles from farm to plate (Cuesa). Teaching students the basics of plant growth and development empowers them to become more sustainable and make a positive impact not only in their community but globally. Skills learned through our greenhouse initiative will be guided through long and short-term activities, research, and other dynamic projects to improve students time management skills, problem-solving, collaboration and work ethic. Concepts from biology, environmental science, and botany will range from the effects of light on seedlings, pH levels, nutrient recycling, sustainability, and so much more. Through our greenhouse project we will create strong and knowledgeable leaders with integral ties to their community. Isn’t food the easiest way to bring people together? Students will be able to showcase everything they have learned through flora that members in our community can benefit from and enjoy. Also, we will share with our student body as we incorporate our produce in our cafeteria. A plant stand will allow my students to grow in a space-effective way all while increasing presentation value allowing the students to feel confident in showcasing their work. We will see our students thrive as they cultivate seeds and experiment with pH meters, light/moisture meters, and different types of soil providing the students with data to record, analyze, and experiment. This will direct their experiments allowing them to grow a variety of produce and decorative plants.
