Dance is a physical art form. I firmly believe that the human body is like a machine. In dance, students are asked to move their bodies in complex ways without having prior knowledge of how their body is put together and functions. In order to build a safe practice and work efficiently, students must have an understanding of human muscoloskeletal anatomy. I incorporate many anatomy lessons into my classes. Throughout all levels of dance, students will learn about the muscles and actions of the body to increase their kinesthetic awareness and build a safe, efficient practice. In the advance level of dance, students will expand their knowledge with an anatomy unit in which they will identify muscles they would like to stretch and strengthen. They will then complete a personal exercise plan evidencing their understanding of anatomical principles, terminology, and safe practice habits. A skeleton will make the lessons even more tangible for the students as they will be able to physically see, touch, and move an anatomically correct skeleton.
