Imagine a learning environment that allows for comfort, sensory stability, and independence. "Coffee Shop Learning" has become an increasingly popular design for classrooms -- supporting learners of all ages and ability levels. By supporting this project you are allowing my students the opportunity to embrace their individuality and personal-learning styles, ultimately putting the responsibility on the students. It is essential for middle school students to develop their own voice, decision-making skills, and autonomy for their learning. Teaching special education requires me to provide all of the tools necessary for scholars to navigate what learning environment works for them. In addition, your support in designing this welcoming, comfortable classroom will allow for students to collaborate and work successfully. Finally, supporting day-to-day life for middle school students is tough; allowing students to feel cared for, safe, and prepared for learning is essential. Middle schoolers are at an age where that are required to make choices everyday. By encouraging them to take a positive role in their learning, they will be more likely to identify their own needs in an appropriate way. Materials such as wobble stools, stability balls, and balance boards not only allow for movement and sensory output, but also supports their physical health and core strength. The Bosu ball, bean bag chairs, and husband pillows will also provide comfortable, safe options for students to learn each time they enter my classroom. And lastly, the fluorescent light covers provide a relaxing atmosphere for my anxious learners and gives them an opportunity to create and produce work in a calm state.
