Students Wobble but They Don't Fall Down: Active Seating

Funded May 14, 2019

What are active learners? These are the kids who move around a lot, who fidget when they try to sit still, who are oftentimes considered hyperactive. It's not that their learning style is bad; it's just different. My room is filled with these types of learners.

Some kids need to be in motion to concentrate. Engaging their body helps them retain information better and work out cognitive problems. It's recently been shown that kids with ADHD actually learn better while they're moving. It's my personal belief that this also applies to all kinesthetic learners.

One of my kids "Jay" is an active learner. They probably did not have a problem in preschool but when they started kindergarten, it became apparent that just sitting would be hard for them. An active learning style does not mix well in a traditional sit at your desk classroom setting. As a teacher, I wanted to honor the varied learning styles of my students. I've been trying to come up with creative ways to incorporate physical activity into the work that needs to be done, but sometimes it's copying words - there's no active way to do that. Until the KORE Wobble chairs started being used.

Now there is a way they can move around a bit while working. KORE Wobble Chairs are made for kids to be able to move as they learn. The base is rounded, allowing the sitter to wiggle and fidget to their heart's content! This is great for most of my learners and ideal for those few who need to be moving.

I have ten chairs so not everyone gets to have one all the time but the chairs are moved from person to person on a weekly basis so that all students eventually do have access to try them.

I love having the alternative seating options and thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my teacher's heart.”

With gratitude,
