We had a good document camera for the past eight years. It was very useful for students to take their work to the front of the room and project it for everyone to see. They could then hold discussions about their work allowing students to learn from each other in their own vernacular rather than listening to a teacher repeat what had previously been said in the teacher's vernacular. It also built self-confidence for the students as they gradually overcame fears about performing in front of peers. Late last school year the camera broke. We tried a lower end replacement this year and the students were so dissatisfied with it that they spent time recopying their work instead of just being able to show their work. Recopying really slows us down. A document camera will allow students to be at the front of the room quickly and easily presenting their work, leading class discussions and building their own self-confidence in talking in front of groups.
