I teach five classes of students in this rural West Virginia high school who love to ride their four-wheelers, hunt, fish, and trap. I don't teach the honors students, so needless to say, the majority of my kids will become welders, mechanics, carpenters, etc. Each and every one of them maintains they hate to read. The few sets of novels we have at the school would only serve to reinforce this aversion; they're all 18th and 19th century snooze-fests that would not feel relevant to my students. To ask them to "Open to page 1 of The Mayor of Casterbridge" would possibly elicit a mutiny! I'm hoping to procure two classroom sets of books: "The Glass Castle" and "The Education of Little Tree." I really believe that my students would not only relate to the content of these books but enjoy them as well. The poverty level is staggering; we have a 100% free breakfast and lunch program. I cannot ask even one student to buy a book.
