Black Excellence Legacy Hallway
Funded Feb 5, 2024Thank you so much for donating to a project that will have an impact on generations of students. On our most recent professional development day, the 11th and 12th grade team spent the afternoon permanently hanging the new artwork and decor in the hallway. It was a quite a transformation from the previous 25 year old posters.
The next school day when students returned, so many had smiles and were happily surprised. Having a warm and welcoming school environment has a huge positive impact on student outlook. They take pride in our space now and we thank you for that!”

Decompression Space Needed
Funded Nov 30, 2023Thank you so much for the furniture and the keurig and the coffee! Because the project was funded so quickly, we were able to set up the lounge space before finals week. It was a great surprise.
During finals week, it felt like a college campus. Students sipped their coffee and hot chocolate and studied and practiced problems in the new space. Some others just it as a break space in between finals.
Thank you again for creating a retreat for our hard working students. We are decided more than ever this year to ensure our students have a warm and welcoming physical environment.”

Paper and Hot Stuff!
Funded Oct 11, 2023Thank you so much for the support. The students have been so grateful for the microwaves, and it has led to an increase in students eating breakfast and lunch. When students are nourished, they are much more productive in class.
Yesterday, a senior brought food they cooked at home and reheated it in the microwave to share with their table. It seems like a small thing, but the microwave has built community.
Thank you also for the toner and paper. We have a teacher out on leave and the resources have been very helpful to prepare sub materials.”

Funded May 4, 2023We just finished summer school and it was a complete success! We had so many students with perfect attendance that I had to create more award certificates at the end of summer awards ceremony! It brought our staff great joy to experience students excited about summer learning.
Each Friday, we had Freeze Pop Friday for any student without referrals for the week and it was so much fun! As a staff, we all connected as we were reminded the joy that a freeze pop brings in the summer. It truly was a weekly event that students and staff looked forward to.
Thank you again for supporting incentivizing summer school.”

Anatomy in Action
Funded Apr 28, 2023Thank you so much for your contributions to this hands-on science experiment! It was a wonderful way to conclude the school year and students were SO joyful. Many of my student are seniors and there was absolutely no senior-itis on that day. 100% engagement!
By completing science labs, students learn they are capable of more than they think. Students learned about dissecting tools and skills and they learned about anatomy. More than anything - they learned confidence and reading and following the instructions of a lab manual - an invaluable skill!
Thank you again for the support.”

AP Environmental Science Students Need Lab Kits
Funded Nov 30, 2022Thank you so much for supporting my vision for students to learn science through hands on science activities and investigations. The first day we did one of these labs, I gave the class a warning that there were 5 minutes left in class. Someone said, "Wow! Already?!" When you are fully engaged in the lesson - time flies!
Next month they will take the AP test. I can say without question that the content they know most deeply is the content they learned through their labs.
Thank you for providing these opportunities for these students - most of them did not complete many labs in their high school experience due to the pandemic and this semester changed the game for them.”

Funded Oct 19, 2022Thank you so much for your donations to get us a copier, toner, and paper. This has been such a hard week in our school district. It was nice not to have to worry about scrambling for basic needs like paper during a time full of such sorrow. Our students are slowly returning to school and they have been so happy to get into learning in a way that does not induce stress. Their learning materials are neat and well organized. Although technology has many great advantages, our students have done so much virtual learning that they really appreciate having tangible learning materials.
Thank you again!”

This is Real: Water Pollution
Funded Aug 14, 2022Thank you so much for your contribution! I am new to my current school and the students shared that it was the first lab they have done in years due to interrupted school at the peak of the Covid 19 pandemic. They were 100% engaged in the hands-on learning experience and it inspired me to figure out how I can do more labs in the classroom.
Donors like you ensure that students like mine receive the same opportunities that students in more affluent districts receive. It is incredibly meaningful to provide real-life STEM experiences to build a more equitable world.”

Calculating Our Way to College
Funded May 16, 2017Thank you so much for your contribution to our project to get a class set of calculators for our founding 9th grade students. We are two weeks into the school year and so far, so good in terms of student culture and academics. The biggest struggle we've had thus far has been ensuring that our scholars have what they need each day to be successful. Many of our families do not have the resources to buy any school supplies, let alone a $100+ calculator. This class set of calculators has alleviated some burden and pressure from our hard-working families. Students already used the calculators in 5/8 of their first lessons in math class. We are putting them to use.
Truly thank you for helping us to get off to a strong start.”

Funded Dec 31, 2016Thank you so much for your support.
Some people may think video-ing in a school is extra, but it really improves our practices and helps students learn more. The video camera and tripod have been put to a lot of use!
The first way in which we have used the video camera is to film the "mini lesson" portion of teachers lessons. This is the portion of the lesson where the teacher explains the new content. This has been meaningful in two ways: students that are absent can view the video on youtube AND the teacher's coach can review the video with the teacher to discuss and practice how to do it better in the next lesson.
In addition to filming lessons, we've also filmed a lot of coaching sessions and professional development sessions which we are using to coach our team of teachers.
Thank you for improving our effectiveness and increasing student achievement!”

Ms. Niewald
