Although I teach 10th grade, many of my students have reading abilities severely below grade level (3rd grade and up). Unfortunately this makes many of the required texts and suggested grade level material inaccessible to them. With the graphic novel form of Julius Caesar, students gain extra support in understanding the complex themes of the play. The simplistic language and stunning graphics makes the content of the story easy to understand. Without comprehension as a barrier to their learning, my students can then focus on using Julius Caesar to learn the required skills they need, such as analyzing theme, irony, archetypes and so much more. Julius Caesar is a required part of the curriculum. Every student should have a chance to read, understand and apply it's ideas. The graphic novel levels the playing field for my students by using language they can understand and giving them a chance to truly engage with the text.
