"Am I black or white," I asked my mom when I got home from my first day of 2nd grade. Of course, I knew I was Indian, but I did not feel empowered enough in my identity to be able to say that in my white school life. Now, as a kindergarten bilingual teacher in a high-need community school, I not only want to help my students feel confident in their ethnicity, language, and culture, but I also want to prepare them to be in a world as strong and self aware bilingual and biliterate community members and leaders. With the support of Donorschoose, I bring materials in to facilitate their experiences early on with exciting manipulatives and strive to deepen their learning through the excitement of taking their learning beyond pencil and paper.
