Although I teach in an urban, low-incoming, low-performing school in Oakland, I am fortunate to teach a group of high performing, rising-star students. I have seventy-seven ninth-grade Geometry students. Three out of every four students (71.4%) are proficient or advanced in math on California Standardized Test (CST). Every nine out of ten students who came from a private middle school and did not take the CST passed the math placement exam. Those who did not pass are concurrently enrolling in both Geometry and Algebra 1. In addition, I have sixty-six students enrolled in Advanced Algebra classes. The students are mixed grade-levels from 9th to 12th. The ninth graders are advanced in math on CST. All of the tenth and eleventh graders are at least basic in math on CST and passed Algebra 1 and Geometry with at least a C. Two of the six 12th graders repeat the class for the second time, and the other four took and passed Probability and Statistics last year.
