When it comes to school success and students with developmental disabilities, these students often need adaptations in order for the child to increase independence. As a school based Occupational Therapist, a variety of equipment is needed in order to address each students skill set and teach them how to develop motor skills needed for everyday classroom tasks. I requested the alternative seating including the jellyfish chair and wobble stools for students who benefit from movement based learning and demonstrate increased focus and attention when they have the ability to move their bodies. Next, I often use adapted pencils and/or pencil grips to help kids promote the use of a functional grasp for writing. The specific pencil grips I have requested are simple for student to learn how to use and will teach them how to properly hold a pencil. I also requested various visual and fine motor games/tools in order to promote the use of fine motor precision which is needed for classroom tasks. For example, I requested snap together letter blocks which addressed letter learning and fine motor skills. I asked for letter bean bags to integrate learning with gross motor skills and movement. Alternatively, I requested a variety of sensory material (sand, shape mats and water beads) in order to help children integrate and modulate sensory information. To further elaborate, the ability to modulate incoming sensory information is an integral part to being able to participate in school as sensory information is all around us. Lastly, I requested peg boards, scratch paper, and puzzles to promote bilateral hand use, hand eye coordination and motor planning. All of these skills are necessary for school success. I thank you unconditionally for your support in achieving my goals to promote student success.
