Funded Oct 2, 2017Our classroom has been practicing on creating new words and blending syllables and thanks to the file folders that we received from your donation, my students have been able to develop more advanced and independent reading and comprehension levels. They can relate the activities they do on the file folders to our daily phonics lessons. They say words that appear on the folders as well as how they are spelled. High frequency words is one of the things that kindergarten students have to master by the end of the school year. These file folders have activities that has helped them become familiar with these words and can recognize them during our morning message and their reading level books. Students have the opportunity to use these file folders during workstations in which they believe to be "play time" without realizing that it's another fun way of learning. Another amazing result that I have seen on my students is that students have acquired many social skills such as sharing, cleaning, responsibility, participation, following directions, helping others and staying on task. It is amazing seeing them when the timer goes off cleaning and ensuring that every piece of each folder is put back in there color coded envelope so that the next group is ready to use it.
Another awesome thing is the listening center and the read along books that we received. Thanks to these multi-leveled books, my students are developing their listening, comprehension and writing skills. These books have open many doors into the reading world. One of the things that I have strongly incorporated with these books is that I read two books twice a week and then they are used in the listening center for the students to re-listen. Students have been taught that we use our finger to follow along and these books are just awesome because it teaches them when to turn the page maintaining students active and alert during the read along. After the listening center, students move to the writing center in which they will complete a sentence stem and illustrate what they wrote about regarding the book they just heard. Students at this point have been developing skills that will help them understand what the book is about by making connections, retelling, comparing, and giving details about the stories. As a teacher, I can see where each student stands academically and I can group them accordingly and continue expanding their knowledge.
As I mentioned in my project, finding Spanish resources for my bilingual classroom can be very expensive and challenging. This has been an amazing year so far, seeing my students have better useful resources that have helped them reach higher academic levels is just mind blowing. I have received thank you notes from parents saying how grateful they are for helping their children succeed in their first school year but I could not take full credit without first thanking you for what you have provided for my students. On behalf of my students, their parents and myself, we gratefully thank you.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Tovar
