I am applying on behalf of the Albany High School Math department requesting a class set of Graphing calculators. We will share the class set among our Math 3 and 3+ classes so it will support the vast majority of Albany High School Juniors (16 and 17 years old) enrolled in math. As we adopt the common core state standards, we have really seen the power and benefit of discovery learning, where students work in groups to find patterns and discover math formulas, rules, and strategies. We have seen it lead to higher student engagement, empowerment of students’ thoughts and ideas, and longer retention. As we move into teaching Math 3 and 3+ we are finding that the technology requirements are much higher and students will need access to graphing calculators. Because it is an equity issue we are not able to require them to buy their own so we are finding that we need to have a class set of graphing calculators for them. They will be able to develop familiarity and comfort with these graphing tools which will help them throughout high school, on standardized tests, and in their college classes. They will also be able to use them in class to experiment with graphs, find and describe important features, run probability simulations and work with a variety of statistical functions to supplement and support our Math 3 standards.
