Our school was chosen as a School of Innovation by the State Dept. of Education in Arkansas. We wanted to use this opportunity to introduce our students to what lies beyond the city limits of our small town. I work with students in Computer Coding and robotics. We have several cities in our surrounding area that have companies looking for applicants who know how to code. It is our hopes that by incorporating as much instruction in coding using Cubelets Mini Makers that we can help our students apply and receive these great paying jobs. There are several online options for teaching coding, but we are lacking the hands-on items to help our students strive for a better future. My goal is to introduce them to careers in the STEM field by allowing them to learn coding and then use coding to program robots. We are currently working with robotic kits on loan from a nearby university. The kits must be returned in the next few weeks. We would like our own. These kits would provide my students the ability to start a robotics club and hopefully compete with other teams. Also, the students want to video their projects and share them with the younger students in hope of fostering a love for technology. We meet three times a week for actual hands on activities and coding. My students can't wait to attend these sessions. With the funding of this project, we will be able to continue the hands-on portion of class. Students must maintain a B average in their classes to attend my class. We have witnessed an increase in class participation and performance because students want to attend my coding and robotics classes. This has been a great academic incentive, but we need our own materials.
