The books will be placed into our classroom library. Students will be able to check out any book of their choosing and read during silent reading time. After finishing their book, the students will then be able to take a reading quiz on www.whooosreading.org to test their comprehension. Our classroom library includes many outdated books, many from the 1970s - 1980s. Having new and current books in our library will help catch and keep the student's attention. When their attention is focused on a certain book, they have a higher probability of reading it until finished. This will increase their reading stamina and comprehension of the book. The Chronicles of Narnia boxed set will help enhance their understanding of the chronicles. One of the main texts we will read this year is The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe which is included in the Chronicles of Narnia boxed set. Having all of the chronicles readily available will pique students' interest and keep them invested in our anchor text. In the book "The Stars Beneath My Feet", a young boy tries to stay on a safe path through the projects in Harlem in the wake of his brother's death. The main character in the story is 12 years old which is around the age of some of my students. I believe this book will help my students connect with the main character and help give them a positive outlook on life.
