  • Organizing for Success

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

Thank you so much for helping fund my project. My students were so excited when they saw the new carts in the classroom. They help my students, my co-teacher and I to organizer our materials and keep them near by.

In our classroom we have tons of manipulatives and supports that students can use to make sense of learning. Often materials had to be kept in different locations, or not in reach. The carts allowed the students to keep supports near-by, so they can be accessed at anytime. Students are able to keep their items organized in way that is convenient and aesthetic.

    Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Porzio

  • Making Time for Current Events: Becoming Local and Global Citizens

    Funded Jul 31, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous donations! Our second grade classrooms have been using the Time For Kids magazine every week to study important current events going on in their communities and the world around them. The have learned about everything from the devastating fires in the Brazilian Rainforest to how children are helping others in their communities by holding birthday parties for children in need.

Students have been using a variety of strategies when reading the articles. They have been working on how to identify the main idea of an article and support it with key details from the text. They have also worked on building paragraphs that start with a clear topic sentence and are supported by facts from the article. Students even used their math skills to plan a party for a friend within a certain budget.

As the year progresses students will continue to read the articles and use more complicated strategies to help them comprehend the articles. Students will be making predictions and connecting to the text as they respond to tasks. These articles are not only helping students become aware of the world around them, but they are also becoming stronger readers. Thank you again for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Porzio

In today's world children are constantly faced with news stories from social media. Students need to be able to listen to a news story and differentiate fact from opinion. They need to also ask questions to further understand how point of view impacts the story, and how it is being presented. By using TIME For Kids as a shared text, we could incorporate local and global events within our classroom at a level that students will be successful reading. We will incorporate reading strategies in conjunction with the articles so that students will become better readers while learning about the world around them. TIME For Kids is aligned with the standards and provides instructional materials that are also aligned with the standards. The TIME For Kids magazine features age-appropriate stories that kids are excited about. When students are excited about what they are reading they are more focused and want to take part in their learning.
