Sonic the Hedgehog
Funded Dec 23, 2024I have been a kindergarten teacher at a public school in the Bronx for 18 years. My students come from low-income families. Some of my students sleep in shelters, and some do not speak English at home. Many rely on books from the internet and/or library rather than buy their own. They adore Sonic and my project was to provide each of them with the book MEET SONIC! to have at home. Thanks to you and Ben, the project is fully funded and each of my students will receive the book.
On behalf of all my students, thanks for your kindness and generosity.”

This classroom project was brought to life by The Mo & Cher Willems Foundation and 2 other donors.Magnetic Magic
Funded Oct 31, 2019With a tremendous amount of appreciation and gratitude we thank you for your generous donations to our project. The students were overjoyed when they saw the magnetic 10 frames especially when they realized they each get their own to explore and tinker with.
The students are currently working on addition. Specifically, solving addition word problems and using counters in a variety of patterns to develop fluency.
In the next week or 2 the students will represent and explain subtraction with the ten-frame and counters. The 2-sided counters are the perfect tool for solving any math problem.”

What the Heck is a Rekenrek?
Funded Aug 16, 2018Thank you for your generous donation to my class project. The rekenreks arrived to the delight of my students and they could not wait to start working with them. I first became aware of the rekenreks from another teacher and discovered what a valuable tool they are for young mathematicians.
In Kindergarten, the children are learning about addition and subtraction for the first time. The rekenreks provide the hands on experience to support their learning. In addition, the rekenreks encourage cooperative problem solving that is a major emphasis in our math program.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Craig Newmark Philanthropies and one other donor. My Space for Learning
Funded Aug 19, 2018Thank you for your generous donation to my project. The new rug arrived to the cheering sounds of my kindergarten students. I am a true believer in classroom management and organization and the color blocks on the rug contribute to this. The children sit at tables with coordinating colors so they know exactly where to sit on the rug. The layout of colors allow each child to sit in his or her own space without interference from another child. We conduct many lessons on the rug and the children are attentive and comfortable.
Thank you again!”

DASH Into Robotics
Funded Dec 23, 2017Thanks to your generosity, our class received two Dash robots. The children are learning programing skills that will enrich their education for years. The robots are programed through an iPad. The children learn to teach Dash how to move forward, backward, turn right and left. In addition, Dash can be programmed to speak and use other vocalizations. The robot, in turn, responds to voice, navigates objects, sings and dances.
The children teach Dash and Dash teaches the children. The robot reinforces their knowledge of sequencing and problem solving. By programing steps in sequential order, Dash navigates through a pattern from a starting point to the end. Another wonderful thing about Dash is that the children learn to work together as a team. Brainstorming and trial and error are all part of this cooperative problem solving.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Con Edison and 3 other donors.Viva La Musica!
Funded Nov 29, 2017Thank you so much for providing instruments to the children at the school where I teach.
The children and I are so grateful for the instruments you have provided. When I first showed the children the instruments, they were overjoyed with excitement. I named them and demonstrated how to play them. Everyone was focused and interested in playing. They could hardly stay seated. Every time the children see and play the instruments they are enthusiastic. They all want to use every instrument.
I let them try a different instrument every class so that they develop skill and confidence in their musicianship. There is much experimentation, too. During one period, each child had an instrument. They sat in three sections: [1] drums and tambourines, [2] guiros and shekere [3] glockenspiels and triangles. One child conducted, having the first section play, then the second section, then the third. The conductor had some sections play together, then stopped one of the sections, while the other two continued to play. The children learned a variety of ways to combine the sections, just as it is performed in an orchestra. Another time some children played a steady beat while the others played the rhythm of a poem. They are having a concert soon and they will be using various instruments while they are singing. This, of course, adds another dimension to their concert. They love music and really appreciate the instruments you have given them. I am so happy for them.”

An Apple a Day!
Funded Oct 23, 2017Well my students could not have been more excited. When I told them that they could do computer science on the Apple lap top they were jumping for joy. So we thank the generous donors that contributed to our projects.
My students are energized and ready to learn! We do computer science on Tuesdays and I let my students explore. Many do not have access to a computer or ipad. They are learning how to navigate the web and use the mouse. Every once in a while I hear "wow." That is what I want to hear.”

My Space for Learning
Funded Nov 11, 2015Every day the children assemble on the rug for morning meeting, lesson introduction and teaching session. The children identify their square by color and know where to sit. The children were so excited to see a beautiful, colorful, clean rug that belonged to them.
We use the rug throughout the day for our lessons. It contributes to class routine and structure while enhancing the academic environment.
We also use the rug in our math lessons. The 30 colored squares represent a 10 frame for our addition problems.
The children in my class thank you for your generosity and support.”

Mrs. Gold
My Space
Funded Oct 4, 2013When our new rug arrived, the children let out a cheer. They sat on the rug, each in their own designated box, with a huge smile on their face. The children felt like they just received a special and wonderful gift.
In Kindergarten, many whole-class lessons are taught in an area of the classroom floor. The children sit on the floor in a crossed-leg fashion. This rug has 30 colored boxes that coordinate with the colors of the tables that the children sit at. Transiting from the tables to the carpet is easy and perfect for classroom management.
The design allows each child to sit in a colored box without being too close to the next child. The children are more attentive and participation has increased. In addition, the rug is very colorful and enhances the classroom environment.”

Circle Time
Funded Mar 21, 2012I, and all the children from my kindergarten class this year and years to to come, thank you for your generous donation. The floor easel has proved to be a very effective teaching tool especially when working with small groups. The magnetic side allows me to display graphics and use it as a write&wipe surface. I can display big books on the sturdy ledge.
During our literacy center time, several children use the floor easel to explore magnetic manipulatives and direct their own lesson.
This is a tool I can use with many students years to come”

Mrs. Gold
