Having a set of Chromebooks will allow for different structures of learning in my classroom. One way they will be used is as a STEM center. Our school is making a shift towards Student-Led Project Based Learning which requires the students to do a great amount of research. Many of my students do not have reliable internet sources outside of class and most use their smartphones to help them connect to the internet. Having an in-class set of Chromebooks will allow them to stay current with their work load and allow me the opportunity to teach them important research skills. Recently, we investigated how different methods of water purification can help end the Global Water Crisis. Students could research different purification methods that were applicable in developing nations and test these methods on their own contaminated water sources. They could collaborate on group findings by sharing through the cloud. I could download apps for various chemistry practice skills from a chemistry center, which would allow me to have activities for both my highest performing and most struggling students. My project will make a difference because, as I said before, these students are the digital natives. Our classrooms are not yet at the level technologically to meet their needs as learners and we lost a few of our Chromebooks due to Hurricane Harvey. This grant will help to close that gap just a little bit more.
