I am a first-year teacher with no class sets of novels. I also do not have a classroom of my own this year. The school library has limited copies available for students to check out the novel, most definitely not enough for our entire junior class. Having a class set of Gatsby novels will make teaching easier for me, and in turn, greatly benefit my students. With this classic novel, I plan to introduce students to the concepts behind "The American Dream," feminist takes on the novel, and have meaningful discussions about class differences and classism. The Great Gatsby is an integral part of our American culture, so this unit would help my students gain important knowledge about American History.
