This novel is about a middle school boy, Steven, who plays drums, is in love with the cutest girl in school, and is easily irritated by his little brother, Jeffrey. But, when Jeffrey gets Leukemia, Steven's world, as he knows it, ends. This story is about family, adolescents, emotions, and illness. The story does an amazing job of bringing the readers' into the mind of Steven. This book will allow me to teach students that, sometimes, not understanding your feelings is perfectly normal. I'll be able to teach that not all families are perfect all the time. I'll be able to teach them that being selfish is normal and that it's okay to just want to be a kid. I'll also be able to teach them about how some things in life are just not fair. As a Leukemia survivor myself, I want to teach my students about the horrors of cancer, but also the strength, courage, kindness, and empathy that people show during a family's darkest time. I want to be able to share my story about survival with them to show they can do anything they want as long as they believe in themselves.
