Reading often happens when we hardly realize we're doing it. When we're scrolling through Facebook pages, opening a New York Times article a friend sent, or even looking up lyrics to a song on the radio, we're reading. To help my students prepare for life after high school, it is crucial to give my students opportunities to use technology to develop literacy skills. Reading on a Kindle will provide my students with access to an expansive collection of books while using 21st century technology skills to engage with literature in a new way. While I like to think I have a good variety of books in my classroom, the potential to explore new titles, subjects, and genres on a Kindle is unparalleled to any amount of books that could fit on my shelves. Additionally, my students won't be intimidated by a large book with many pages in front of them but rather inspired and excited to use new technology. A Kindle will support and encourage my students' curiosities and desires to learn by providing them with a user-friendly interface, clear, readable fonts, and countless apps to practice vocabulary. Lastly, a Kindle will show my students that reading can happen anytime and anywhere just by touching a screen. A Kindle will help alleviate some of the fears my students have about reading, but more importantly, it will inspire them to learn on their own outside of school. A quote from the film Shadowlands written by William Nicholson about C.S. Lewis goes, "We read to learn that we are not alone." We read to connect, grow, and discover. If one device could help you access the world of reading, wouldn't you want one, too?
