These students were placed in my class because their standardized scores from last year placed them below other ethnic groups. This replaces their elective course. In teaching them the necessary language arts skills, my hope is to also teach them growth mindset strategies so that they are able to face obstacles in the classroom and outside of it as well. Since this is replacing their elective I'd like to use novels to teach and build interest in reading. The title of the books are "Esperanza Rising" and "Wonder." The two novels I choose are perfect for teaching students how to face challenging situations! I plan to use them one day a week for the entire year to build interest in reading, providing the students with a sense of accomplishment (reading an entire novel!), using them to teach life lessons about perseverance and reading strategies they can incorporate into their future language arts classes. I'm super excited about potentially introducing these novels to my students!
