Last year, my colleague and I took eight students in our cars to tour SDSU and the UC Santa Barbara. There, we explored the college campuses and gave students first-hand experience on college-going expectations. The students on the trip got to visit dormitories, financial aid/scholarship workshops, ate at dining commons, and conducted interviews with college students. The trip was an amazing learning experience and had a tremendous impact on them. Subsequently, it inspired them to speak about these colleges at our annual college fair project to the whole school. This year, we hope to take our 8th-grade advisory students on the same adventure, this time touring UC Irvine. For many, this is the first time they leave outside of the LA regions, and one of their few experiences of a college campus.
According to David, one of my former students, "This trip was so fun. I am definitely going to consider applying to SDSU when I am older." I hope to bring the same joy to our students and to expand their horizons.
On this trip, we will take 45 students to tour the UC Irvine campus on their open house day. As a bonus, they will also check out the University Town Center. Providing this life-changing trip is not cheap, but it is imperative to us that no students pay. This way, all of our 8th graders are given an equal chance to participate, as economic status is not a factor.
Due to a drastically changing educational landscape and state-level cost cutting, we no longer have the funds to make these trips happen within our school budget. The reality is that in order to provide this milestone for our students--an opportunity that most students outside of low-income communities often take for granted--we need your help!
