Technology to Support Students With Special Needs Thrive!
Funded Aug 13, 2019Your monetary contribution that led to the purchase of four new Chromebooks is greatly appreciated. I can't tell you all enough how much it has changed my instruction, how smoothly the class runs, and students' eagerness to learn.
As a teacher of students with special needs who is assigned to teach three grade levels and meet all of the various needs of my students, these Chromebooks have helped immensely and made an impact on the learning process for each of them.
With these laptops, students have been able to access different programs that allow them to receive instruction and practice at their level while addressing their specific grade level standards. Some of the programs like Reflex Math have helped them learn their multiplication tables because they are able to log in every day and get a minimal of 15 minutes to practice. They enjoy it so much that they are coming in each morning and without me prompting them, are logging on independently. In addition, during math I am able to have students go on Prodigy to practice math as one of the stations. For language arts, students are enjoying practicing weekly spelling and vocabulary words through fun games on Spelling City. Writing is a constant battle and now with easy access to a laptop, students are able to either go on and type their thoughts or use speech-to-text software to gather them. They are adding more details that they really want to because the stress of writing pencil to paper is gone. Students are asking me to write! In addition, these laptops have increased compliance in my class. We are now able to pair a non-preferred task with a preferred one, so there is less disruptive behaviors.
Not only has it helped my students, but also my teaching. I am in a class with students on varying levels. This makes it difficult to differentiate and meet all of their needs. Now I am able to have a computer station where I can assign students a task at their level and even provide the accommodations they require and students are able to be independent.
In closing, the atmosphere in the classroom has been greatly enhanced to a positive one where students are eager to learn and becoming more self-motivate. I am now able to work in small groups while maintaining a more effective classroom management style. This gift will be one that will impact students for years to come. Thank you so much!”
