  • Reading Cafe for Teens in Harlem

    Funded Oct 18, 2023

    Thanks to your generous contributions earlier this school year, my students are now enjoying their "cafe-style" reading center!

    On the days we have reading periods, the students who know they are assigned the reading center run to class, excited to read their independent reading books, chilling in a "Barnes and Noble" inspired corner of the room!

    The children wanted me to thank you for making reading an amazing experience! They love the reading center, and since we've opened it, students "Degrees of Reading Power" scores have gone up, on average, 4 points, indicating a full year's growth in relation to reading level, and we've only had it 3 months!”

Our school has always sought to promote communal learning and collaborative work! As a result, we have always used desks that are shared by more than one student. Although we have every intention of continuing our communal approach to learning, we understand that students will need to practice social distancing when they return to the classroom in the fall. To protect them and to adhere to New York State guidelines developed in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we need new single-student desks! Our school budget has been cut dramatically because of the devastating impact of the virus on our city's economy. We can not use school funds to provide these desks for our students. We are dependent upon generous people like you to support this necessary project! Please support our amazing children as they return to the classroom by helping us provide them with the new desks they will need in order to return to learning at school!
