  • Flexible Classroom Seating for Children's Success!

    Funded Nov 1, 2017

Thank you so much for helping fund my project. When my student's arrive for the day they are a little more excited and willing to learn. They are happy to enter the classroom and have embraced the choices I have given them for sitting in a seat of their choice. There are 2 additional choices for student's to choose from when they enter my classroom now. The 2 additional choices are wobble stools and a spooner board for standing on or using while sitting down. I love seeing the students choosing the different options and finding the one that work best for them.

All of our items arrived one the same day, which felt just like Christmas. The kids and I were beyond excited to open the boxes and try out our new equipment. We set up a schedule so that everyone would get a chance to try out this different type of seating. Now, we are so used to the choices they kids do a great job of sharing the seating with their classmates, so that everyone gets a chance at least once during the week.

As for the future, I would like to continue adding different types of seating to our classroom to make the learning environment comfortable and successful for the students. They have asked for yoga balls and cushions to be added to our room. I am looking forward to the many different options that students will have when they enter my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Colliander

I know the importance of having a comfortable work space and this isn't always sittting in a chair while at a desk. I believe the stools, wobble chairs, and balance boards will allow my students the flexibilty to choose a work space that will work best for them. Many students have a difficult time staying focused and on task. By allowing students the ability to be able to move and change seating through out the day students will help alleviate these behaviors. Everything I do in my classroom is based on reserach and best practices. Benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, exerting energy, metabolism booster, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. Researcher Matthew T. Mahar, et al finds that: "Simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially." My students will come to know that a classroom isn't just a room with four walls, desks and chairs. They will come to learn and explore in a cozy environment set up for a variety of needs.
