"No puedo entender. Ademas, estoy aburido." ( I do not understand. Besides, I am bored.) These are common thoughts at times among bilingual students. My goal is for all my bilingual students to understand the lessons and for them to enjoy the learning process.
The teaching process should always be interactive and captivate the interest of the students. If the students are not active participants in the learning process than the students will have a greater chance of not paying attention. Unfortunately, this can affect their academic progress in a negative manner. This is something that I do not want for my students.
In using the "giant" dice I can engage the students in fun games with respect to the lesson at hand. And, for the other subjects I could use it as a point system for answering correct questions. The "giant" dice are attention grabbing and anything to get a student's attention, in a positive manner, is always a plus. With this, I could also incorporate useful prizes, like smencils! And what better way for me to print items for my class to use in their lessons than with a printer of my own.
You know what is also a plus? Reading in comfort. Because all my students are bilingual I place a great emphasis in reading activities to better their English speaking skills. Luckily for me my students seem to enjoy reading. When I give them their allotted reading time I can see the smiles on their faces as they read. Despite having to read in their chair and sit in their desk, I know they could enjoy their reading more if they were provided more comfortable circumstances. Could you imagine if my kiddos had bean bag chairs to sit on? It would make their day!
