Reading for the Haitian Rescue
Funded Feb 17, 2010Our wonderful books arrived! The students were so excited to unpack the big boxes and label, catalog, and shelve our wonderful new library. On March 2, Dr. Seuss's birthday, we invited parents to come read with us. This was our "Read for the Haitian Rescue Day." We had many jars decorated like Cat in the Hat top hats placed around our school and we invited students and families to donate coins. At the end of the 2 hour family read-a-thon, we had raised $487.83 for the American Red Cross for the children of Haiti.
We continue to use and enjoy our wonderful class library every day. We have had such a positive response from the families of our students that we plan to make this service project an annual part of our celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday and Read Across America. Each year we plan to ask the students to choose a cause that needs our help, and "read for the rescue."
Thanks to your generous contributions, this annual tradition will become part of our school culture. Earning money for others will become part of the fabric of our students' education and will, I'm sure, continue in their adult lives. Thank you so very much!”
With gratitude,
Ms. M
