Through my biology class, they are afforded the opportunity to strategically explore their interest in the different disciplines of sciences including investigative science, anatomy, ecology, biology, and in-lab research but do so without proper access to basic and scientific equipment and resources. Collaborative and project-based learning is our way of work coinciding with heavy technological use. My students are predominately of Haitian descent and come from a poor economic background with moderate-high English language barriers. The opportunity to communicate daily lies on cellular devices to record and translate and record language as it is lectured and to convert electronic assignments digital divide when our school is compared to neighboring schools. The technology resources available to students has not kept up with continuing technological advances. When completing projects and activities students are limited to printing on a black and white printer that has failed to function properly on a consistent basis. Hole punchers are used to organize student work binders, portfolios, and display them across science department as model work for all students. By the end of the year, students will demonstrate mastery of essential learning targets by actively exploring real-world ecological and biological problems and challenges that enable them to acquire knowledge.
