  • Keeping Up With Current Events

    Funded Aug 22, 2018

First off, thank you so much for your generous donations! Because of the district budget cuts, we've had to get creative in finding texts to share with our students, and Scholastic News is the perfect resource for my diverse class.

In my classroom, students are at very different reading levels. Scholastic News is a great resource because they offer online resources to help my students who struggle, and the information in the magazine lets my higher students extend their own knowledge. With Scholastic News, I am able to teach all of the reading skills needed to read informational text with a critical eye. Students are analyzing the author's purpose while also deepening their understanding of each article.

The best part about this resource is the students are excited. Usually it's difficult to inspire students when reading informational text. When I used to pass out articles, I would get a groan. Now I hear a "yes!" when I open the drawer where Scholastic News is kept. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tipton

  • Globally-Minded Students Need Research Tools

    Funded Oct 2, 2017

Thanks to your generous contribution, we were able to add 5 Chromebooks to our classroom! This extra technology has helped my students in so many ways. First, I am able to assign projects that stretch outside of the classroom. The Chromebooks allow my students to research real world topics and apply what they learn in meaningful ways. Additionally, because the students often work in small groups while researching, they have learned interpersonal skills to communicate what they need from each other in order to make the group successful.

The Chromebooks were also a perfect addition to the room because they are all linked via a classroom account. Students can start working on a project on one Chromebook and finish it on another because their work is all saved in the Google Cloud. This is helpful to me because I can see where they are at in all of their projects from my own computer and help support them as they create digital products.

With the addition of the Chromebooks, I have noticed an increase in my students' ability to research real world topics. My students have also become more proficient in general computer skills. I feel confident that my students will be able to build upon the skills they have learned from this technology in order to meet the demands on”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tipton

Teaching in Houston is one of the most rewarding experiences. My students are so diverse, and it's a welcome challenge to meet their needs. More than one-third of my students are still learning English, while more than one-half of my students are from an economically disadvantaged household. Despite having these challenges, my students are hungry for knowledge about the world around them. They are the most hard-working students I've had the pleasure of teaching.
