Learning is optimized when students are given choice. Throughout my 3 years teaching, I have watched students wiggle and squirm uncomfortably in their hard, metal chairs. Most schools have classroom furniture that is outdated, heavy, and difficult to move. Noticing that my students need a variety of learning spaces and movement options, I have spent a lot of my teaching career with students sprawled across the floor, clipboards in hand. The seating options in this project will give students the opportunity to choose what seat helps them learn best in a variety of settings. For instance, the wooden stools will be used at my intervention table. An intervention table is a space where students who need a bit more support in a specific area, phonics for example, work with me in a small group so that eventually, they will be able to master a set skill. Currently the metal chairs at my table do not fit properly underneath the table and can hold only about 3 students. The stools will allow me to have 5 students at the table; consequently providing more students with specific learning support. Additionally, the wobble chairs will be used for those students who struggle sitting still in class. The wobble chairs will replace their current desk chairs and will allow students to constantly be moving but still seated. Similar to the wobble chairs, the wobble or bumpy cushions aid students who need more movement but also those who need to develop more core strength. Finally, the bolster pillows will be provided to students would benefit from them when we are working on rug or on the floor.
