My students are eager to read contemporary American literature. They seek to understand the diversity of voices from their communities in the literature they read. Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon is a conceptually challenging text that places students at the center of an ongoing dialog about America's identity and the communities and people that form it. Most of my students will be reading Toni Morrison for the first time. The richness of its language, the affirmation that dialect and language form the fabric of communities both small and large, the hopeful message it brings, will inspire my students to see themselves as part of this evolving story.
