  • Classroom Library Refresh!

    Funded Jan 18, 2025

Here in room b50b in the west Bronx, we are headed into the second semester. The holidays are over and a wintery mix is blowing through the neighborhood. Your donation has sent a shipment of high-interest books into our little space. I am deeply grateful.

Each day I ask my students to read in class and at home. I record their page numbers each day. I congratulate them each day and thank them for reading. Once they’ve finished a book, I take a book selfie photo to celebrate. These are printed and adorn our classroom walls. It’s a beautiful process and sustaining. Yet it wouldn’t be possible without you, without these books.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Keener

  • New to America Book Clubs for Non-native Speakers

    Funded Sep 19, 2024

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express our heartfelt gratitude for your generous donations towards purchasing graphic novels for our English language learners.

The graphic novels you helped provide have been a remarkable resource for our students. Many of them come from diverse backgrounds and face challenges in mastering the English language.

    Positive Impact on Students Include:

    1. Enhanced Engagement: The vibrant illustrations and relatable stories have captured the attention of our students, making reading an enjoyable experience rather than a daunting task. This engagement has fostered a love for reading that extends beyond the classroom.

    2. Improved Language Skills: By integrating visual storytelling with text, graphic novels have helped students improve their vocabulary and comprehension skills. They can better understand context and meaning, which is crucial for language development.

    3. Cultural Connection: Many of the graphic novels feature diverse characters and themes that resonate with our students' experiences. This connection not only makes reading more relevant but also promotes discussions about culture, identity, and empathy among peers.”

  • Book Club Continued

    Funded May 22, 2024

Thank you for your support of our students and our country. Building strong readers is critical to our community. Your donation supported our most recent Americans. They learned to consider future societies through these book clubs and learned to consider our role in society. Let's not forget that these students are our future. Asking them to read these books not only increases their reading level but also helps them to understand how society is a made thing. I have another project up now in donors choose if you have more money to give.”

  • Dystopian Book Clubs

    Funded Apr 15, 2024

At the end of last year, your donation kept my students reading. They loved the dystopian book club unit. It was a joy to see how far they had come since they first entered the classroom as shy Freshman. They devoured the dystopias and asked themselves deep questions about the social commentary of the novels. The best part, each book you purchased was part of a series. Many students took the next in the series home for the summer and some students just plowed straight through a trilogy.

None of this would have been possible without your generosity.

I've got the next project posted on donor's choose if you are able to give again.”

    With gratitude,

  • Amplifying Student Voice Through Podcasting

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

Thank you so much for your support with our class podcasting project. My juniors were able to create podcasts about life changing moments that are bilingual-told in Spanish and English! We are now at an editing stage and hope to launch the school's podcasting channel at the end of May. The students were excited to hear their voices captured in this equipment and the project was a success. I look forward to using this technology again in the fall.

I'm attaching a photo of some of our students using the recorders to give you a snapshot of this work. Thanks again!”

    With gratitude,
