We want to BREAK OUT of the ordinary by using primary sources, critical thinking, and challenging clues to answer a breakout box challenge. Have you ever participated in a break out room? Teams work together to solve clues to break out of a locked room before time is up. The breakout boxes that I am requesting will bring this experience to the classroom, and students will try to crack the clues, this time with an academic twist, to break out before the bell! Breakout Edu offers a platform of pre-made break out games on a variety of topics relevant to my Social Studies and English classes. Break out games are anything but ordinary and will help engage all students in learning while fostering friendly competition in the classroom. The kit comes with a box, a number of different locks, invisible ink and a flashlight, and a year of access to the games. Students will receive a task (a crossword puzzle, analysis of a primary source, etc.) to figure out a code. There will be multiple codes for each 45-minute game, and students win by being the first to crack each of the codes. For larger classes, where students might need to be split into more than two groups, I can create a Google Form for each of the codes. We will be able to use these games to introduce a topic, review for a test, or take a break from the every day grind in a fun, but meaningful way. I can use technology, primary sources, and more to make these games relevant and rigorous. We can even create our own games to engage students in the learning process. Help us get engaged by helping us BREAK OUT!
