Literacy is life or death for my students. I have lost too many to the violence of the streets. I want to show my students that reading can be fun and meaningful. I want them to see that there is a connection to their lives on the written page, while opening up a door to discussing the heavy issues confronting our African American children. Violence, racism, authority; the protagonist of the novel, The Hate U Give, confronts issues that affect the lives of many of my students. Reading a novel outside of the classroom will hopefully generate interest among other students, and my hope is that the book club will grow.
