  • Comics Class Supplies

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

I want to thank you for your donation of headphones and books for my class, Graphic Literature. This equipment has helped my students perform better within the classroom. They are particularly being helped in having headphones. Part of what we do in the class is to draw in different comic styles. I let students watch videos with drawing instructions and do this at their own pace. It makes it difficult for them to do this if everyone's volume is up, so having headphones is particularly helpful.

Please accept my thanks for your wonderful donations. My students certainly appreciate it.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Weems

  • Super-Powered Reading

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

Thank you for your kind donations of books for my Graphic Literature class. My class is not your standard reading class. We read and study graphic novels, and there is only the curriculum that I designed. For a few years, I haven't had the resources to give them the books that I feel would motivate and inspire them. With your kind donations, I was able to remedy this a bit.

I ordered ten or twelve copies of 6 graphic novels so that my students would have a variety to choose from. As soon as I had them make choices and begin reading, they were deeply into them.

Titles span a variety of cultures, from Asian to Hispanic, to African American, to Muslim. Now when we look at reading and structure, students can connect and understand.

Again I thank you for your kind donations. My students are also much appreciative.”

  • Two Screen Learning

    Funded Nov 16, 2020

Being able to use two screens during this time of virtual learning has been an invaluable tool. I can keep my students Meet on one screen while using GoGuardian, my presentation, Kahoot, or whatever else on another. It allows me to give faster feedback and communicate with them much more efficiently.

My classes are only 32 minutes long and every minute is valuable. I thank you again for your wonderful contribution to allow me to work with my students in a much more efficient manner in these difficult times.”

  • Making It Work Online!

    Funded Oct 2, 2020

I want to thank you so much for your donations to my electronics. During this challenging time, it is important for me to be engaged with my students as much as possible. I was inadequately equipped to deal with the technological challenges and thus my students weren't getting my full attention, with constant crashing, lagging, and other issues. Now, with this home set up, I can interact more fully with my students on all levels. Now my class runs smoothly and efficiently and I can give the attention my students need to learn within this environment. We are still in a virtual setting, and I have been able to give them a much better learning environment due to this technology.

Again, I thank you for all that you have done.”

    With gratitude,

  • A Marvel-ous World

    Funded Mar 26, 2018

My class is still considered to be more of an experimental class. I have been for years promoting the benefit of comic reading, in general, to make good readers. There is a mistaken assumption that comic reading is more of a dumbed-down form of reading. Quite the contrary, it is very sophisticated, challenging the reader to look at text less non-linearly and engage different parts of their brain.

I have found that many of our highest level readers in high school are avid comic readers. I've had deeper discussions with students about text through comics than I have had through traditional forms of literature. This is why I transitioned to middle school level to bring this deeper reading to younger readers.

Thank you for helping me fund my class with books that are both challenging and stimulating. Your donation has helped instill this love of reading in my students by giving them material they can read and study.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Weems

  • KerBang! Comics in Middle School

    Funded Nov 22, 2017

All my thanks for donating to this project. Having had little time to prepare, my resources were scarce. Now with some more books, I have more reading material for my students. It is wonderful to see their fascination with reading through graphic novels. I have been using them at the high school level for a number of years now, and to see it filter down to middle school is amazing. I am so grateful that there are people willing to donate so my students have more to fill their minds. I'm hoping this program because wildly successful.”

  • A Timely Wrinkle

    Funded Jan 26, 2018

Having these books to read has greatly impacted the classroom. Now, my students can delve more deeply into the wonderful world of graphic novels. I see students daily reading and learning. It is wonderful to have enough material to make my class run so much more effectively. I cannot thank you enough for your donations to our cause. I am hoping that this will make them lifelong readers and critical thinkers. Your donation is not lost on my students. Please know that you are helping to shape the minds of the future.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Weems
