Students learn best when they have concrete, real-life experiences to connect to the standard. During this science unit, students will be exploring the life cycle and structural adaptations of animals. What better way to do this than to have real animals to observe and collect data on? By integrating reading with science, students will deepen their understanding of the science content while getting even more practice with crucial reading skills. While our butterflies develop, students will record observations with descriptions, measurements, and sketches in science notebooks. During small group reading, students can explore the life of a butterfly with two nonfiction texts. Spanish books are included students who are new to the US and read primarily in Spanish. Through this project, students will be able to learn about the life cycle of butterflies, discuss the structural adaptations that help butterflies survive, and practice their nonfiction reading skills - especially main idea and summarizing. All this comes through the use of hands-on, real-life experiences that many of these students have never had.
