I teach students with mild to moderate disabilities. One thing I have learned is to step into their world to learn more about them and the challenges they face. Thus, I want to create an environment that fosters, welcomes, embraces and supports the different special needs and challenges my students have. Some of these challenges include staying focused and paying attention in class during lessons and to complete work activities. My students also move around a lot in their regular chairs and/or stand up. Creating a flexible seating classroom will give my students an opportunity to choose the best and the most comfortable seating option to learn and work in the classroom. I have already arranged my classroom and saved space in different areas in hopes of filling the empty spaces with the requested items. The low table will give students an opportunity to sit on the floor and work. Students can also sit on the bean bags and pillows with a clipboard to work. My students love books. Thus, students will be able to use the bean bags and pillows as they practice reading. The wobble chairs will be used at their desks in place of their regular chairs and/or at a small group table to help students that constantly need to wiggle while they work.
