This year we are focusing on more hands-on activities and less paper-pencil activities. Each of the kits I've requested provide larvae or eggs so the students are able to watch the life cycles as they evolve, and in some cases touch and experience the adult being. Seeing a child's eyes light up when the butterfly they watched grow from a caterpillar spreads its wings and flies, the ants slowly build their colony, or the hermit crabs molt and establish a larger shell is priceless. These activities will peak the students' interest at a young age. Giving them real experiences that they can touch and interact with in their own classroom will give them a concrete foundation to science. Young children don't always remember what you say, but in 10 years they will remember the experiences you gave them. If students enjoy what they are doing, they will keep doing it. Our society is so focused on science, math, and technology; there's no better age to start than kindergarten. Tangible items that they can see and move provide a great foundation.
