Our students need to see themselves as having a place in this world. Quality diverse literature that we share as a class allows them to see themselves as authors, illustrators, doctors, artisans, scientists, activists, and much more. Our Scholastic News subscription will allow us not only to grow our reading and comprehension (RI and RL.3.10), but also to learn about all that goes on around us in our world, build vocabulary and background knowledge, and discuss ways we can make the world better as we learn and grow. Reading together helps us relearn interpersonal skills and build stamina and empathy. By donating to our project, you are helping my kids see themselves in the books we share, get their hands on materials for sharing their creativity and their good thinking, and tells them that their health and safety are important. In a post-pandemic classroom, keeping the air clean and healthy in our indoor space will allow kids (and families) to put worry aside and focus on growing their hearts and brains. Multiplication (3.OA.A-D) is an enormous task in 3rd grade. Students need to hear each other’s ideas and strategies as well as engage in the onerous task of memorizing their facts. Individual packs of flashcards will allow them to practice, practice, practice. Whiteboards and markers allow the kids to share their thinking and strategies while keeping themselves healthy. Our families work hard to make learning a part of their kids’ lives and I hope to provide them with extra materials to help make all their dreams a reality.
