At my school, we have students in third grade who are in danger of falling behind in reading. We need something different- we've been using traditional reading programs and textbooks, but we need something that will appeal to our uninspired nonreaders. Scholastic News Magazines will enable at-risk third graders to learn comprehension and information processing skills for gathering information from high interest nonfiction text and incorporate current affairs as a way to share their new knowledge. As we all know, nonfiction reading had great appeal to young children who are curious about the world and are eager to learn about a variety of topics. It has been shown that nonfiction reading allows for a wider range of problem solving skills and a deeper level of thinking. This will expose our students to nonfiction text and teach them how to read nonfiction. The students will study text features while practicing their visual learning skills. They will discuss the information with their peers and create student artwork of the important information they understand. I am excited and feel this project will enable students to read and work cooperatively in a noncompetitive way.
