My classroom will focus on better understanding health issues through a sociological lens.
Throughout the year students will immerse themselves in learning about and empowering our most oppressed populations. They will spend time looking at issues surrounding classism, racism, sexism, homophobia, and the stigma of mental illness. We will analyze the systemic oppression of communities of color and the LGBTQ+ population and strive for solutions to these issues. Students will take control of their learning and develop their own ideas through deep thought and critical analysis.
Unfortunately, due to lack of funding within CPS, we have few resources available to the students at our school. With your help, I am hoping to fund a projector to provide my students with the best possible educational experience. There is absolutely no reason that any student should lack resources in their school simply because of their socioeconomic and racial background.
With this technology, students will be able to analyze and dissect a variety of documentaries, movies, short films and videos to improve learning. We will display discussion provoking presentations, primary and secondary sources, develop engaging activities, and improve engagement for all learners. These resources could not be more integral for student success and learning.
Topics will include but is not limited to:
-Confronting the stigma associated with mental health and mental illness throughout history.
-Analyzing the history of prejudice against the LGBTQ+ community, including a look at Reagan's silence during the AIDS crisis.
-A dissection of the War on Drugs, the impact it has had on communities of color, and the influence of the Prison Industrial Complex.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration!
