Funded Feb 8, 2010Teaching in an urban center just became more worthwhile for 35 current fifth grade students, thanks to you. Your donations have contributed to a lifetime of internalized memories, lessons, and skills for the class and the classes to come. I am privileged to work with such amazing youth who are filled with great ideas and have the capacity to make changes in the world as leaders and participants. Our projects, which help foster that potential, was made possible by you. On behalf of everyone that benefits from your contribution, I would just like to extend our gratitude and respects to you.
Along with this letter, you will have personalized thank you notes from my class. Many of them expressed the desire to personally thank you with gifts, but their letters will just have to do. Accompanied with these letters are some photos of the students using the products for their projects, which you helped supply. I only wish I was able to take a picture of the students' faces each time a new package came in. Their faces lit up as they were eager to know what had been in the box and when we could start using it. I even had to randomly select students to open up the boxes as if it was Christmas or they had just won the lottery. More importantly, I hope you can see the engagement and can get a sense of their affinity towards the technology they gravitated to.
With your help the students finished up their projects and presented their work to UCLA and the community. They amazed the crowd for sure, as they have amazed me, and your contribution helped in all this. They created PowerPoint presentations and went around from class to class to share their research findings and suggestions for changes. The students utilized the donations to create a Community Action Research Project that which culminated in a Community Action Night put on by the students. They were able to create 4 PSAs (public service announcements) which addressed issues of racial profiling, media influence, peer pressure, and bullying. From this experience, the students have not only done extensive and high level research, but they are able to foster a sense of pride and care for their community as they have created action plans that address the issues of their community. During this process, the students are impressing everyone, and getting a taste of their future possibilities.
In this day and age technology is everywhere. You have to be savvy around it in order to navigate and be successful in today's world. With the supplies you have helped bring to our class, and the projects we use to introduce the students to, you have contributed to the production of engaged, competent learners and leaders.
Once again, thank you for your donations and considerations. ”
With gratitude,
Mr. Tan
