After doing some research, I have learned that many students read for extrinsic reasons (teacher's desire, parents, points, etc.). The outcome is typically a lack of desire to read after the motivation has been fulfilled. The goal of this project is to develop readers that want to read for intrinsic purposes. Intrinsic motivation and ample choice in a text are what is going to create a lifelong reading lover. In the classroom, the students will participate in a challenge in which they will read many books of their choosing of various genres. Rather than reading for points, the teacher's desire, homework, or other extrinsic reasons, my students will be reading books of their choosing in a challenge to become children who love to read because it is fun. This challenge is called the "40 Book Challenge." After learning more about this, the goal is to create students who love reading by creating choices and open dialogue about books. In order to do this, I am seeking out more options in order to create a library that the students are excited to be a part of to select their books. I am aiming to have more books at several levels to better meet the students needs.
