The music teachers in my district are working toward creating an equitable, music language K-12. We are trained in the World Music Drumming curriculum and are working toward implementing our shared vision. The drums I am requesting are the foundational tools for World Drumming. Each size drum has its own timbre and place in the musical conversations we will be creating. Students will take turns being different voices in these musical conversations. Through World Drumming, students learn essential musical skills, have a significantly increased opportunity for self expression. Creating music is a segment of my curriculum that needs more focus. These drums provide a playful connection to national music creativity standards. As students become more comfortable in playing the tubano drums they take on an air of confidence and demonstrate the qualities of an independent musician. Drumming teaches more than music, it teaches children how to be good servant leaders through practicing cooperation, the importance of silence, in order to listen, and how to thoughtfully speak out (solos). Through the use of these drums, when our students gather for musical events, they will have the same language and tools to create and appreciate the music being performed. As our students learn and perform, our parents and families will have opportunity to learn and perform too. I am looking forward to music events where the whole audience is involved in making the music, everyone's contribution is valued, this shared experience strengthens our community.
