Technology- the Pen and Paper of our Time
Funded Dec 9, 2019I am so happy to know that there are such wonderful people out there that were eager to help my students be stronger readers and mathematicians. I can't thank each of you enough for your kindness and generosity. I cannot wait to see their faces when the tablets arrive to our classroom but more importantly I cannot wait to utilize these tablets in our classroom to help improve their reading and math skills! Watching students grow as learners through the technology you provided for them will be truly amazing. Thank you again for helping to give my students the tools they need to be as successful as possible.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Geller

Funded Oct 26, 2018I teach 1st grade in East New York located in Brooklyn, New York. I am the special education teacher in an inclusion classroom. My co-teacher, the general education teacher, and I have 26 students. Out of those 26, 8 of them have an IEP (individual education plan for students with special needs). Several of our students are below grade level in reading, writing and math. The population of the students in our school are black. They come from low socioeconomic homes and live in rent stabilized housing. Some students are being raised by a single parent that works extensive hours. While others are being raised by an older grand parent. Many of these kids are not getting academic support at home. The goal of my co-teacher and I is to instill a love of learning in our students. We try our best each and every day to provide them with a strong educational foundation. Together we have created a place where our students love to come to school, are engaged in learning and feel safe and happy.
The books that I have ordered for my classroom library vary in topics. Many help me to teach them courage/self-esteem (Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun, Those Shoes, Happy Dreamer) and friendship (Sticks and Stones, 7 ate 9, Chopstick, Spoon). I also ordered books to help teach writing. These selected titles go hand and hand with our writing curriculum; Non-fiction- Salt in His Shoes, What If I had Animal Hair, I'm Trying to Love Spiders and Opinion Writing- Hey, Little Ant and I Don't Want to Be a Frog. These books have helped to foster a love of reading.
Everyday my co-teacher and I read aloud books to our class. We allot a set amount of time to read aloud a book while the students sit on the carpet. They participate in Turn and Talk to discuss the books; characters, problem/solution, theme, and main idea. By listening to us read aloud and participate in class discussions, the students learn to love and appreciate literature.
I also orders a series of books that my students love, Pete the Cat and Piggie and Elephant. These books are found in book bins in our classroom library where the students can choose them and read them independently. These are funny books that the kids have grown to love.
I am so grateful for the collection of books that I can share with my class this year and years to come. Thank you so much. It is so appreciative!!!”
