My students have been reading and listening to a CD player without earphones most of this year. Our listening center is no longer operating and the need for a listening center is at the top of our priorities. In our Kindergarten classroom we run stations, one of our stations is a Reading and Listening Station. We have operated it fully this year by using a CD player I brought from home; it is an older CD player and does not have the headphone jacks. My students who are at this station listen to a book on CD; while listening they have the book in front of them, and are following along. Students at the Reading and Listening Center are also given the opportunity to put their thoughts into basic writing. They are developing the skills of expressing themselves in and through art as well as the ability to sequence. It is not possible for the children at this station to have the volume too loud because of the distraction it causes to other children in the class. I have some students with sensory integration problems, and the background noise of the CD playing is over-stimulating for them, and causes anxiety which triggers behaviors. Numerous kids are kinesthetic learners therefore the multisensory approach of seeing and hearing the words auditory will better solidify their understanding of print, their reading development, and will increase vocabulary. When they are hearing the words and see the pictures they gain a greater understanding of their world around them, being able to understand their world around them opens up a realm of learning.
