In an effort to attend to my students' vast individual needs, I would like to begin creating a Makerspace within my classroom. Studies have shown that Makerspaces within classrooms provide powerful contexts and opportunities for students to learn and develop new skills.
I believe firmly that this learning environment fosters enthusiasm for learning, student confidence, and natural collaboration. It has also been shown that Makerspace learning can also empower students, helping them to shift from being passive consumers of information and products to active creators and innovators. This shift I hope will also lead to the ending of a destructive poverty cycle. By introducing my students to various STEM equipment that they otherwise would not have access to, I am hoping to spark a passion and curiosity about science, engineering , robotics, etc... that may create the intrinsic desire to better themselves. Through the use of the various materials accessible within our Makerspace, I also hope to create a sense of pride and accomplishment which many of my students need to feel!
The materials requested are just the beginning needs of my Makerspace. I want to create a Lego Wall, to foster creativity, imagination along with problem solving through vertical play. I would also like to add a couple of Ozobots, which would allow the students to learn Coding through play and discovery.
My hope is to continue to grow my Makerspace but for now, my students and myself would be extremely pleased with the above mentioned materials.
