One area that many of my students struggle with is day-to-day problem solving and critical thinking. The items I have requested below; the word locks, directional locks, 3 or 4 digit locks, hasps, and lock boxes will all be utilized in the creation of breakout clues that will have students engaged and looking at materials in a way they may not have processed before. Breakout boxes offer students an opportunity to solve, process, and analyze information in a fun and inventive way while still receiving content information. These boxes will change how students process things not only in my classroom, but in their daily lives. Each lock requires a different skill set to unlock and the great thing about the variety of locks is that breakout boxes never have to look the same! Each time a breakout box is used, students must process everything they know and formulate the best plan of attack to solve it. Many times in education, students fall into the trap needing to have the "right" answer on the first try - or thinking that there is only one way to get to that "right" answer. As a teacher, I want to ensure that my students are open-minded and out-of-the-box thinkers who are able to process and analyze situations in a variety of ways - not just find the answer in a book or "Google" it. It is vastly important that our students be able to function and process things in new ways - so that when the time comes, they can step out into society and offer new solutions to old (and new) problems. These supplies will help me create students who can think critically, problem solve, and make the world a better place!
